Farms/Farming
1. Protect the act of “farming”, especially if family-owned, from foreign competition, foreclosures, and being leveraged by corporate interests.
2. Redefine the Agriculture Department and urge them to take responsibility for rejuvenating small and medium sized farms as well as new farms. We need to assist our farmers in a responsible manner so that they may be productive on their own.
3. Redefine the middle-man process that buys farm commodities and puts them up for resale. This would help farms to market commodities more efficiently, while not overpricing the goods for consumers.
4. Support Local FFA and Agriculture University Departments to help small farmers start and market commodities.
Farming is the back-bone of our food supply, yet it is an endangered form of living.
I raised cattle once, and I understand the difficulties farms can and do face. I would like to see some form of protective legislation that would keep farms intact. This could include measures to help small farms compete and survive in today's economic environment. We need a healthy mix of small, medium, and large farms that can be sole proprietors, partnerships and LLC that can bring their product to market without being leveraged by corporate entities and middlemen.
